Badminton triples is exactly what it sounds like: three players against three players on one badminton court, following the same rules of a standard badminton game. For both the serve and the rally, you use the doubles lines.

Usually, there will be 2 players in the back and 1 player in the front, but during the rallies, the players have the option to move anywhere on the court.

Why Play Badminton Triples?

Badminton triples are a great way to warm-up before regular matches. There is less leg movement, so you won’t have to strain yourself to get the far-reaching shots. However, you are still able to react and hit quick shots to get your body and mind into the right place.

Triples are a great way to test your speed and reaction time. For example, In the frontcourt, you will need to get used with cutting off faster shots, while in the Backcourt players will need better placement, power and reactions to be able to return hard drives or hit winning shots.

Here are more reasons why you should try badminton triples:

  • 6 players can play in a game, so it’s a fun way to get some exercise with your friends.
  • It’s a great way to improve your badminton skills.
  • It’s a great way to stay active and engaged, without physically challenge yourself.
  • It’s a great way to have some fun and relieve stress.
  • It’s a great way to get out of your comfort zone.

Rules of Badminton Triples

Scoring

The scoring system in badminton triples is the same as every badminton game: 21 points to win the game. But each time the shuttlecock is returned, another teammate needs to hits it. For example, if you return a serve, you must not hit the shuttlecock if it comes back again. So, you have to pay attention to your teammates in order to get out of their way.

Positioning

Badminton triples are played on the same court as a regular doubles match, but they have 3 positions: right backcourt, left backcourt and frontcourt. When the score is even, the front players of both teams have to stay on the right side. When the score is odd, front players need to switch to the left side.

The normal rules still apply, except that there are three people on the court. Low-level triples can appear much like high-level doubles with little lifting, but plenty of fighting.

Position rotation

When a team wins a serve, they have to rotate clockwise. Meaning, the player that was on the left backcourt position will be the one who serves.

The problem with this rule, though, is that you can only ever serve two of the other players. One way to deal with this is to just switch up the starting lineup at the start of each game.

Give Triples a Try!

Badminton is a great sport for all ages and abilities, and triples is a perfect way to mix things up if you’re looking for a new challenge.

In triples, each team consists of three players and the court is divided into three sections. The game is played just like doubles, but with the added element of the third player. This means that there are always two players on each side of the net, which can make for some exciting rallies!

Not to mention, it’s a great way to get some exercise and have fun with friends. So next time you’re looking for something different, why not give badminton triples a try? You might just surprise yourself at how much you enjoy it!
